Ik heb lang getwijfeld tussen de Strymon Iridium, DSM Humboldt Simplifier MkII en de Walrus Audio ACS-1. Ik was op zoek naar een manier om de elektrische gitaar 's avonds te kunnen spelen zonder vrouw en kind wakker te maken met raggende gitaren. Daarom ben ik op zoek gegaan naar een oplossing en uiteindelijk beland bij de amp+cabinet pedalen. Ik was hierbij voornamelijk geïnteresseerd in een pedaal dat
1. goede amp en cabinet simulatie biedt;
2. een goede koptelefoonversterker aan boord heeft en
3. stereo in en uitgangen heeft.
Een effects-loop zou helemaal mooi meegenomen zijn, maar de Boss IR-200 lijkt de enige in deze prijsklasse die dat biedt. De geluidskwaliteit van dat pedaal is goed, maar de amp. simulaties kunnen blijkbaar beter. De Simplifier klinkt geweldig, maar de koptelefoonversterker is van slechte kwaliteit.
De Iridium is al enkele jaren dé standaard waar al dit soort pedaaltjes mee vergeleken worden, en is een goede keuze. De ACS-1 heeft echter vrij recent een firmware update gekregen, waardoor de cabinet simulaties zijn verbeterd, en de versterkersimulaties meer gain aankunnen. Na het luisteren van zo'n beetje alle mogelijke vergelijkingen die ik online kon vinden is de keuze geland op de ACS-1. Naar mijn idee klinkt de ACS-1 ná de update naar firmware v2 beter dan de Iridium (bij v1.0 en v1.3 zou ik de Iridium hebben gekozen). Qua kwaliteit heb ik niks te klagen! Het pedaal klinkt erg goed en de koptelefoonuitgang geeft goed geluid. Het is een solide pedaal, de knoppen draaien soepel en het geluid is helemaal prima. De bediening is wel wat omslachtig als je op beide kanalen een andere versterker + cab. sim wilt instellen, maar dat doe ik zeker niet elke dag ;-).

Mijn voornaamste punt van aandacht is het feit dat het pedaal (net als bijna alle pedalen overigens) geaard wordt via de output-jacks. Als je enkel de ingangen gebruikt en de koptelefoonuitgang, is de ACS-1 elektrisch zwevend. Ik had hierdoor last van brom. Deze verdween zodra ik de uitgang van de ACS-1 in de instrumentingang van mijn normale gitaarversterker stak.
Strymon heeft in de handleiding van de Iridium precies dit probleem omschreven en geeft ook deze oplossing. De ACS-1 is er dus niet alleen in. De helpdesk van Walrus Audio had echter geen idee waar ik het over had en kon me niet duidelijk maken of dit voor hun verwacht of niet verwacht gedrag is. Na een eerdere technische vraag aan Walrus Audio voor een ander pedaal heb ik geen hoge pet op van de technische kennis van hun helpdesk.

Anders dan dat: goed pedaal en ik ben tevreden!

This is a good as the videos suggest. I have two Hughes & Kettner Statesman Dual EL84 20w combos and did an A/B test with the left out from my Helix Stomp XL going straight into one of the H&K’ and the right out going through the ACS1 into the PA. The only effect on the Helix was the expression pedal used as a pan so I could easy switch between the two. I then set up 18 patches on the helix to transmit a different MIDI program number so I could easily switch between the 18 combinations of 3 amps and 6 speaker cabs. Each one was different with their own characteristics. I then modified the EQ each of the 18 amp/cab combinations to get as close to my H&K clean channel. The Fender Deluxe through the Vox Blueback was pretty well spot-on.
I don’t use the Helix for amp sim, just stomp pedals and use different overdrives and distortions so once I’d got the ACS1 settings, I went through my patches to make sure they all sounded similar. Most did, but the chosen Fender/Blueback combination didn’t pick up the high frequencies of the Helix’s acoustic sim. However, switching to the Vox amp/Blueback combination gave me back the acoustic sim effect. Similarly one of the overdrives sounded thicker through the Fender/Blueback but great through the Vox/Blueback.
Some of the more overdriven patches actually sounded better to my ear through the Marshall/4x12 combination.
So I’m really pleased I can match what I need it for but also can bring in more variety. I played around with the Vox/Blueback and a treble-booster in the Helix. Really maximising the volume going out the Helix to drive the amp and it’s probably the closest I’ve ever come to the Brian May sound.
So the feel, the compression, sag etc of the various amp/cab combinations are the best I’ve ever played. I’m looking forward to doing some more A/B testing with my brother’s AC30
The stereo capability through the PA will add do much width to my chorus and delays and the MIDI capability makes it so easy to change, not only the program, but each amp, cab, EQ, volume, gain and room control can be changed with MIDI change controls.
So once it’s set up, it’s easy.
I’m totally chuffed with it and look forward to road testing it in July.

Kop telefoonnuitgang dus goed op savonds op zolder te oefenen.
