Back in the mid-seventies, the first ever analogue delay was born and wreaked sweet, echoey havoc on the guitar world as we knew it, and at the heart of this illustrious pedal sat the now-renowned 3500 bucket brigade chip. In the years and decades that followed, more and more analogue and then digital delays appeared, but none of them have ever been able to reach the same level of warmth and authenticity of modulation of the OG, simply because those 3500-chips were as scarce as gold dust. Taking history into its own hands, the Xvive W3 Memory Analog Delay comes with a fresh chip at its core that's been faithfully based on the original 3500, so it's able to deliver that original '70s feel, without costing the Earth.
The W3 Analog Delay: More Than Just Delay
While the control panel of this stompbox provides the standard-issue controls for delay, feedback and blend, you also get speed and depth pots. Then there's the drive pot, which takes cues from the old-school analogue tape-delays that came loaded with tube-driven preamps, and adds anything from a light and hazy distortion to a delicious crunch to the output. For enhanced hands-free control, an expression pedal can be connected to tweak the modulation in real-time, and an extra output enables an all-enveloping, fully stereo set up with the help of a pair of amplifiers. While the W3 more-than convincingly emulates the past, thankfully it was built for use in the 21st century, and can be powered by a standard 9V power supply.

Verder heeft het pedaal nog enkele interessante aanpassingen: (1) hier kan je ook de rate van de modulatie kiezen, ipv een twee standen-schakelaar met chorus/vibrato. (2) het pedaal heeft veel meer headroom dan de DMM; luide signalen gaan niét clippen, tenzij je dat wil door de preamp te oversturen. (3) het pedaal heeft een "true stereo" output, wat ronduit prachtig klinkt! (4) met de exp-ingang kan je de delaytijd ook met een expressiepdaal bedienen.
Eerlijk is eerlijk: uiteraard heeft de Xvive Memory ook enkele minpunten. (1) De repeats hebben bij langere delaytijden wel wat ruis. Dat is normaal voor een 100% analoge delay, maar deze heeft er nét iets meer last van dan de andere analoge pedalen die ik heb. (2) De delayrate gaat tot een maximum van 600 ms, maar voorbij de 450 ms krijg je flink wat "gruis"/clocknoise in je klank. Voor mij persoonlijk is dat geen probleem, omdat ik eigenlijk altijd rond de 350 ms blijf hangen voor dagelijks gebruik.
Eindconclusie: een aankoop waar ik zéér tevreden mee ben. Voor een uiterst schappelijke prijs heb ik nu het hoofdbestanddeel van de magie van de originele DMM ter beschikking. Ik heb in totaal 11 delaypedalen (veel te veel, ik weet het), maar enkel deze Xvive doet wat de DMM kan.
